I am so excited. I am starting to count down the days! Needless to say, I'm getting this in hardcover the day it comes out. What's that, you say? Susan, you don't like hard covers, you can't carry them? That's true. But this book I plan on staying in and reading all that weekend. I'm not going anywhere, dear readers. The book I am talking about is, of course:
The new horror book from Stephen King. Doctor Sleep carries on the story of Danny Torrance from The Shining. The Shining is one of my all-time favourite novels, and is due for a reread, which is so handy considering the sequel is just about to come out!.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I AM SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reading slump or no (see my post from yesterday), at least I'll have The Shining and Doctor Sleep read in September. The hard part is waiting for RIP to officially start, so I can count it as one of my RIP books. And Doctor Sleep. I can hardly wait!!!!! What happened when Danny grew up???????????
To get you (and me) into the mood for RIP, here is a link to an Entertainment Weekly interview with Stephen King from last winter, about how he came to write Doctor Sleep.
One month from tomorrow, my Gentle Readers! Doctor Sleep is out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have it on pre-order, but will probably wait and take it on holiday with me in October, but am also very excited (though still have a few Kings to read, Under the Dome being one of them....)
It's a really odd thing but I have never read a full-length Stephen King novel. Plenty of his short stories, which I love. One of those (more a novella I think), The Mist, is one of those 'indellibly imprinted on my mind' kind of tales. It scared me to death and I've never forgotten it. And then there's the TV drama of Salem's Lot. OMG... And the movie of The Shining... I should try 'reading' them to see how I get on I suppose. And the BBC has just started showing The Dome, we recorded the first ep to see if we like it. And I loved, loved, loved his book, 'On Writing'.
Cath - You should def. check out King's last book 11/22/63 as an introduction to his novels. A good mix of romance and horror if such a thing is possible.
I am so excited for this as well!!!
I had no idea this was coming out! I can't wait to read it now!
Thanks for the rec, Great Catsby (wonderful user name). I will certainly check that one out.
I think that to be properly excited I need to read The Shining first :P I do love that cover, though!
Bride: where are you going in October? or is it a staycation? Either way, it is exciting, to know more Danny Torrance is here, isn't it? More shining.....I really hope to be scared, good old-fashioned scared, like The Shining does for me, with Doctor Sleep too.
You have to get to Under the Dome, just so you can compare it to the tv series when it gets over there. I far more liked the book to the show.
Cath: Wow! I can't believe you haven't read any of the novels! though it makes me laugh that you have seen the movies! I'll be interested how you find the books. I do hope you do try one. I have his book On Writing too, which I also really loved - it is one I keep dipping into, even now 11 years after it was published.
How did you like Under the Dome? I prefer the novel to the tv series, though the series is enjoyable to some extent. My kids are excited at getting to see it! lol
The Great Catsby: I know your remark was for Cath, though I thought I'd add that I have 11/22/63 on my shelf to be read, also! lol I am hoping to get to it this year. I've read almost everything he has done, so it's mostly a matter of finding a chunk of time to be able to sit and read it. I'm thrilled you can hardly wait for Doctor Sleep too :-)
Daphne: yaaay! I surprised you! lol and it is in time for RIP too, which is perfect.
Cath (part 2! lol): that is a wonderful user name, isn't it?
Ana: Yes!!!! You do!!! lol I hope you do enjoy The Shining....it really does have some terrifying moments. I really enjoy the connection Danny has with one character in particular (which you will know when you read it), so I'm hoping for something similar when he meets up with the girl in Doctor Sleep, the main heroine.
It is an interesting. striking cover, isn't it?
Susan, we watched the first episode of Under the Dome a couple of nights ago. Peter liked it, I was a bit 'so-so' about it. It kept my attention but some of the plot devices, ie. the young guy keeping his ex-girlfriend in an under-ground bunker, seemed a bit formulaic to me. I'm rivetted by the dome itself and want to know what's behind it, but am not sure I want all that other stuff that I've seen elsewhere in other series. I will keep watching though to see if it grabs me better. It really might be better for me to read the book instead... I'm more tolerant with the written word. LOL!
Cath: you are so spot on, that's how I felt about The Dome tv show, and I'd read the book! I had to stop watching it, it was boring after the 4th episode because I knew what was going to happen, and there was much less creepy factor in the tv show - ghosts do turn up sort of in Under The Dome, but the real horror is how the people react to one another, and Barbie is much more of a hero in the novel than in the tv show. I much prefer the book to the show. I'm curious if it gets better or worse for you and Peter.
OOOOOOOOOOOOh!!! I didn't know about this book! Thanks, Book-Twin...I owe you one!
Bybee: Yaaay! I'm so glad you are excited too!!!
